From the past to the present

York Scooter Club was formed in September 1975 with about a dozen members, a year after the York Roadrunners and Outcrowd scooter clubs had disbanded. The No.1 was drawn out of a hat and he lasted for about 6 months before being kicked out for not pulling his weight, a new No.1 was elected but he disappeared soon afterwards and the club just drifted along until sometime in 76 when Tom Petch picked up the pieces. For a long time it was the only club in the area and subsequently the numbers grew to about 100 in 1977, but then a couple of other clubs started up in the area, Bootham Tavern Scooter Club and a branch of Leeds Saxons and the numbers dwindled. Also in 1977 York SC was instrumental in organising the first long distance run to Brighton.

1978 saw the filming of Quadrophenia. York SC were contacted by the producers to act as extras. Some weeks later at short notice only 8 members were able to make the trip to Brighton for filming. The club has made numerous TV appearances, one around the time of the 'mod revival' on 'Northern Life' (Tyne Tees) when the interviewer said they didn't look smart enough to be mods. Another on 'Nationwide' (with Barnsley Vikings) which compared northern mods with their southern counterparts, concluding that the northerners were scruffier but had better scooters !!! IIn 1980 a letter from Tom to Scootermania instigated the first No.1's meeting and the start of the mass scooter rallies as we know them. In 1982 Tom stepped down and Mal Woodward took over, though Tom remains to this day a keen and ehthusiastic member.

After Mal Woodward stood down 'Diddy' Barker was voted in as No.1 who was eventually replaced by Phil Morley. Andy (Sluice} Kay is now No.1

Through the years they have met in various watering holes in the york area but now reside at the Bay Horse on Marygate Close to the centre of York.

Also in 1996 they were stars of Yorkshire Television Heartbeat
